Beekeeping

Beekeeping or apiculture is the maintenance of hives of honeybees for the production of honey. It has been an age-old cottage industry.

The species of honeybees used in apiaries are Apis cerana, Apis dorsata and Apis florae.

People star keeping bees for many reason. Some simply enjoy honey and want to produce enough for their own needs. For many, a general interest in the honey bee or ecology prompts them to acquire hives.

The reward of beekeeping extend beyond honey and pollination. Bees produce other products that can be harvested and put to good use, including beeswax, propolis and royal jelly. Beeswax produce by honeybees is used in many industries like production of cosmetics and polishes.

Poropolis is the gooey material bees gather from trees and plants to strengthen and sterilize the hive while royal jelly is a substance secreted by bees to feed their brood.

The beehive stay for at least two years before the farmers can harvest from it. Therefore, the farmers always have many beehives at different places. The harvest can only be done in the evening so that bees cannot see the farmers.

Modern apiculture in based on the ancient Greek techniques of creating a so-called bee space. In the United States, a beehive based on this ancient principle was developed by Lorenza Lorraine Langstroth in 1851.
