Coldwater aquaculture

Aquaculture is increasingly important in sustaining food supplies as global assessments reveals.

Aquaculture occurs in these general environments:
*Warmwater aquaculture
*Coldwater aquaculture
*Mariculture or marine culture

Coldwater aquaculture involves the commercial production of stock that thrives in cool, clear freshwater with temperature between 10° and 18.3 °C. Particular species may have a preference within that band.

Rainbow trout, Atlantic halibut and Atlantic salmon are examples of coldwater aquaculture. Rainbow trout will tolerate and perform more efficiently than Atlantic salmon at the higher end of the range.

Warmwater and coldwater are also generally considered freshwater – no salinity.

Modest trout production and coldwater aquaculture practices became established in several remote upland areas throughout Asia and Latin America and the burgeoning middle classes across these continents may provide renewed stimulus to high value coldwater fish culture.
