Green and wax beans planting

Green beans are often called snap beans or string beans, though modern varieties are almost stingless. Wax beans are similar but turn yellow as they mature and usually have a milder flavor.

Green and wax beans are planted from seed in the spring or when temperature will allow.

The plant need at least eight hours of full sun. Beans grow in about any soil. However, good, rich compost provides bountiful results. Seeds will germinate quickly and grow well under the cover. Sow seeds 1 inch deep, 8 inch apart. Plant them in a checkerboard pattern, 12 to 16 seeds per bale total.

Fertilize monthly, but go easy – too much produces more leaves and fewer beans. Beans rarely require additional nitrogen fertilizer but usually benefit from additional phosphorus and potassium.

A period of 50 – 70 days is required for planting to harvesting.  Upon harvesting, bean should be cooled 4.4 °C and held at that temperature until sold as the fresh products, or until processed.
