Permanent crops

A permanent crop is one produced from plants which last for many seasons, rather than being replanted after each harvest.

Land under permanent crops is land cultivated with crops that occupy the and for long periods. The land need not need replanted after each harvest, such as cocoa, coffee and rubber.

In Asia the most important permanent crops are coffee, fruits and nuts.

While in Europe, permanent crops account for 9% of organic agricultural land. More than half of this land is used for lives, followed by fruits, nuts and grapes.

Permanent croplands, such as vineyards and fruit and nut orchids, are touted as investment vehicles likely to produce annual returns as high as 25%, primarily through annual income.

Permanent crops’ growing stock depreciates over time as the plantings mature and get closer to replacement age.
